People over 50 are frequent targets of romance scams. These steps protect your heart, your money and your safety.
- Meet in public first. Have at least one video call and one meeting close to home before you travel together.
- Never send money. No gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or "emergency" loans to someone you have not met in person, however convincing the story.
- Book and pay for your own travel. Keep your own ticket, your own room key and your own way home.
- Share your itinerary. Give a friend or relative your plans, your date's name and profile, and agree on check-in times.
- Choose busy, well-reviewed places. Check the destination on our Safe Travel Dashboard first.
- Going abroad? U.S. citizens can enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and should save the local emergency number and the U.S. embassy contact.
- Trust your instincts. Pressure to rush, secrecy, or refusing to video chat are warning signs. It is always fine to cancel.
- Report scams. Tell the dating platform, and report fraud to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
