Proper Hospitality Business Dress Code: from business formal luxury hotels to smart casual on campsites.

Proper Hospitality Business Dress Code guidelines vary significantly based on the establishment's brand identity, ranging from business formal in luxury hotels to smart casual in modern lifestyle properties like Proper Hotels or campsites.

Why I think it is very important to keep the traditional professional career dress code, rather then going all the way “I am in my PJ in the office for the photoshoot”? Even when we live a simple minimalistic lifestyle, pleasant appearances, especially in business like hospitality, is essential for the first impression. I can go camping or to do my nails in my yoga pants or jeans, but I will not show up in the office in the same outfit, sorry. Casual boss, is ok. But sneakers and jeans during professional event of meeting, are not.

You know what is interesting I personally had a zoom interview with one guy about sales position for insurance company and because it was a zoom I did not care much about what I was wearing, and just put Calvin Klein Hoodie. He advised me, that for the next meeting “I should be wearing something more appropriate ~ like a dress”. He was right. I did not think that zoom was that important for the meeting dress code. So it is very important, even in the digital format for any financial or management position.

I also had a personal experience with … an attorney. Who came to the court hearing looking, as if: she just jumped out from the wagon with the hay on it, dress being too short, wrinkled, as if she slept in it all night. un-appropriately colored stocking, complete mess. Let’s just say my first impression was not very pleasant … When you see person, in a position of power and respect, dressed as if they have no money to buy a clean clothes or iron it, it makes you wonder about their state of mind, in overall. I get stress, I get tiredeness, I get a lot of kids, plus career on top of it. I been through all of it. But there are still rules by which we all exist and play social game. It requires personal discipline, I guess. Dress code is such a minimal requirement to follow.

Front-of-House Professionalism

  • Luxury/Formal: Employees typically wear tailored suits, blazers, dress shirts, and polished closed-toe shoes. Women may wear business suits, dresses, or skirts with blouses. Appearance must be neat, well-groomed, and conservative, with minimal jewelry and subtle makeup. Skirts and dresses ideally must be little below the knee, covering it and WEll ironed.

  • Lifestyle/Modern: Establishments like Proper Hotel may adopt a smart casual or business appropriate code, allowing for stylish, well-fitted attire that reflects a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining professionalism. This often includes dress pants, collared shirts, and polished footwear without mandatory ties or heavy suits.

  • Back-of-House: Staff such as chefs and cooks wear uniforms (e.g., aprons, chef coats) designed for safety and hygiene, often requiring closed-toe, non-slip shoes.

Key Standards Across All Roles

  • Cleanliness & Grooming: Clothing must be clean, pressed, and in good condition. Hair should be neat, nails manicured, and personal hygiene strictly maintained.

  • Brand Alignment: Attire should reflect the property’s image; for example, a luxury brand demands formal wear, while a beachfront resort may permit smart-casual attire.

  • Safety & Hygiene: Closed-toe shoes are generally mandatory for safety. Jewelry should be limited and non-distracting, and strong perfumes/colognes are often discouraged.

  • Consistency: Policies are enforced to ensure a professional first impression, with clear communication via employee handbooks and training.
