Weather strategy
Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi): high chance of heavy rain and rough seas in August and September. Boat tours to Phi Phi may be cancelled.
Gulf coast (Samui, Phangan): recommended for this season. Rainfall is much lower and seas are calmer.
North (Chiang Mai): afternoon showers are common but usually short. Mornings are often sunny.
Flight connectivity
Chiang Mai to Koh Samui: direct flights run mainly on Bangkok Airways and can be expensive, $150–$250 per person. Connecting via Bangkok (BKK) on low-cost carriers such as AirAsia or Nok Air is cheaper but takes 4–5 hours in total.
Booking: book domestic flights at least 4–6 weeks ahead for better rates.
Visa requirements
Most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia and others) receive a 60-day visa exemption on arrival in 2026.
Mandatory: complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online within 3 days before travel.
Entry rules change; confirm with the Thai embassy before you fly.
